The hotels, restaurants and personal observations identified below come from our own trip. Timing suggestions and optional activities are general planning guidance, so confirm opening hours, transport schedules and entry requirements before booking.

Trip Overview

  • Route: Naples → Sorrento → Positano → Rome
  • Recommended length: 9 days
  • Travel style: Comfortable to luxury, with food, culture, coastline and history
  • Best for: Couples, first-time Italy visitors and travelers who enjoy a balanced pace
  • Getting between cities: High-speed train, ferry and local transfer

Day 1 — Arrive in Italy and Continue to Naples

Morning

Arrive in Rome and continue to Naples by high-speed train. Leave enough time between your flight and train in case immigration or baggage collection takes longer than expected.

Afternoon

Check in and take an easy first walk through central Naples. Triyana Diaries stayed at the Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo, which made exploring on foot convenient.

Evening

Begin with authentic Neapolitan pizza. Our trip included Gino e Toto Sorbillo and L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele. Expect queues at famous restaurants and keep a flexible backup nearby.

Day 2 — Naples: Streets, Coffee and Pizza

Spend the morning exploring Naples’ historic streets, churches and lively neighborhoods. Stop at Gran Caffè Gambrinus for traditional Italian coffee, then browse local shops and the city center.

In the afternoon, walk toward the waterfront and enjoy the city’s harbor atmosphere. Leave space for another classic pizza meal and chocolates or desserts from Gay-Odin, another stop documented in our story.

Day 3 — Naples to Sorrento

Travel across the Bay of Naples to Sorrento. Ferry service can be seasonal and weather-dependent, so check the current schedule; a train or private transfer is a useful alternative.

Triyana Diaries stayed at the historic Grand Hotel Cocumella, overlooking the Mediterranean. After check-in, slow the pace: wander through Sorrento’s center, find a café and enjoy the evening atmosphere.

Sorrento offers a gentler pace between Naples and Positano.

Day 4 — A Relaxed Day in Sorrento

Use this day to explore Sorrento without rushing. Walk the charming streets, visit the town center, sample local dishes and enjoy views across the bay. The slower pace is part of the experience.

If you prefer a fuller schedule, consider a day excursion, but avoid packing every hour. Sorrento works especially well as a place to recover between more active travel days.

Day 5 — Sorrento to Positano

Continue to Positano by ferry or road transfer. If arriving by ferry, ask your hotel to arrange a porter. This was one of the most valuable tips Triyana Diaries received: Positano’s steep steps make even carry-on luggage difficult to manage.

We stayed at Hotel Miramare, recommended by a friend, and loved its classic Italian character and balcony views. Spend your first afternoon getting oriented rather than trying to cover the whole town.

Day 6 — Positano: Beach, Boutiques and Views

Explore Positano’s winding lanes, boutiques, cafés and artisan shops in the morning. In the afternoon, relax near the famous dark volcanic-sand beach or enjoy the clear Mediterranean water.

For dinner, look for fresh seafood and handmade pasta. Freshly squeezed orange juice was another simple favorite during our Amalfi Coast stay.

Day 7 — Positano to Rome

Transfer from Positano toward Naples or Salerno, then take a high-speed train to Rome. Book the long-distance train in advance when your dates are fixed, and allow generous time for the coastal connection.

Triyana Diaries stayed at The St. Regis Rome, conveniently located within walking distance of the train station. After arrival, take an evening walk through a piazza or historic neighborhood.

Day 8 — Ancient Rome

Dedicate the day to the Colosseum and the surrounding archaeological area. Reserve timed admission through official channels and wear comfortable shoes. Continue through Rome’s streets and piazzas in the evening, when the city feels especially atmospheric.

Day 9 — Vatican City and Departure Planning

Visit the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel with a timed reservation. Dress appropriately for religious sites and allow more time than you expect for security and crowds.

If your flight leaves the same day, replace the museum visit with a relaxed walk and schedule a safe transfer window. Otherwise, enjoy one final evening meal and depart the following morning.

Where to Stay

  • Naples: A central location near Toledo, the historic center or transport connections is practical. Triyana Diaries stayed at Renaissance Naples Hotel Mediterraneo.
  • Sorrento: Choose the center for convenience or a coastal property for views and a quieter atmosphere. Our stay was at Grand Hotel Cocumella.
  • Positano: Location matters because of the stairs. Ask about porter service and the exact walking route before booking. We stayed at Hotel Miramare.
  • Rome: The historic center suits first-time sightseeing; the Termini area can simplify train travel. We stayed at The St. Regis Rome.

Getting Around

Use high-speed trains for Rome–Naples and the return toward Rome. Ferries can make the coastal legs scenic, while private or shared road transfers are useful when ferry schedules or weather do not cooperate. Pack light: steps, platforms and cobbled streets are easier with manageable luggage.

Food and Dining

Naples is the essential pizza stop on this route. Along the coast, prioritize seafood, handmade pasta and seasonal ingredients. Reserve destination restaurants when they matter to you, but leave room for spontaneous cafés and family-run places.

What to Book in Advance

  • Long-distance trains once your itinerary is fixed
  • Colosseum timed admission from the official ticketing channel
  • Vatican Museums timed admission from the official Vatican website
  • Hotels in Sorrento and Positano during busy months
  • Positano porter service or a luggage plan
  • Airport and coastal transfers when connections are tight

Practical Travel Tips

  • April, early May, September and October can offer a pleasant balance of weather and crowds; conditions vary, so check current forecasts.
  • July and August can be hot and crowded, especially along the Amalfi Coast.
  • Do not underestimate Positano’s stairs.
  • Build flexibility around ferries because weather can affect service.
  • Validate current entry rules, opening hours and reservations before travel.
  • Slow down—some of the best moments come from wandering rather than checking off attractions.
