Best Time to Visit Savannah: Weather, Crowds & Seasons

For most first-time visitors, spring and fall offer Savannah’s best balance of comfortable walking weather and outdoor atmosphere. The right month, however, depends on whether you value flowers, lighter crowds, lower seasonal demand or warm evenings.

Spring — flowers, festivals and strong demand

Spring is Savannah’s signature season. Azaleas add color to the squares and parks, and daytime conditions are often well suited to long walks. March requires special care: Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration brings major crowds, road closures, altered parking arrangements and high accommodation demand. Travelers who are not visiting specifically for the event should consider another week.

April is our strongest all-around recommendation. By May, expect warmer afternoons and plan more breaks, water and shade.

Summer — heat, humidity and afternoon storms

June through August can bring temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s, substantial humidity and afternoon thunderstorms. Begin outdoor sightseeing early, reserve the middle of the day for lunch or an indoor attraction, and return outside later. Lightweight clothing, water, sunscreen and rain protection matter.

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November. A trip during these months does not mean a storm will occur, but flexible reservations and close forecast monitoring are sensible.

Fall — warm, walkable and well balanced

October and early November are excellent for visitors who want to walk Savannah’s squares without peak summer heat. Days can remain warm, evenings may call for a light layer, and outdoor dining becomes more comfortable. Hurricane-season awareness continues through November.

Winter — quieter and cooler

Winter daytime highs are commonly described in the 50s and 60s, although colder periods are possible. Pack layers and take advantage of a generally quieter city experience. Shorter daylight means planning outdoor photography and riverfront walks earlier.

• Lighter seasonal activity: January or February outside event weekends
• Warm evenings and indoor-outdoor dining: late spring or early fall
