7-Day Brazil Itinerary: Rio de Janeiro & Iguazu Falls
In brief: A seven-day Brazil itinerary combining Rio de Janeiro’s landmark views with the Brazilian and Argentinian sides of Iguazu Falls.
Official planning sources: Brazil official tourism information · Argentina national parks. Check the relevant authority or provider for current entry rules, opening times, reservations and transport.

Seven days gives a first-time visitor a realistic route through Rio de Janeiro and both sides of Iguaçu Falls. This plan allows three full days in Rio, a dedicated travel day to Foz do Iguaçu, one day on each side of the falls and a final flexible morning before departure.
Trip Overview
- Days 1–3: Rio de Janeiro
- Day 4: Fly to Foz do Iguaçu
- Day 5: Brazilian side of Iguaçu Falls
- Day 6: Argentinian side of Iguazú Falls
- Day 7: Flexible morning and departure
Day 1: Rio’s beach neighborhoods
Morning: Arrive in Rio and settle into a hotel in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon or Botafogo. Keep your first morning flexible if you are arriving on a long-haul flight.
Afternoon: Walk the beachfront between Copacabana and Ipanema. Stop at Arpoador for the coastal view and time your walk for sunset if the weather is clear.
Evening: Choose a relaxed dinner near your hotel. Save late-night plans for another trip; the next two days start early.
Day 2: Christ the Redeemer, Parque Lage and the Botanical Garden
Morning: Reserve the earliest practical entry for Christ the Redeemer. Morning weather can still change quickly, but an early start usually leaves room to adjust the rest of the day.
Afternoon: Continue to Parque Lage and the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. These stops work well together and offer a quieter contrast to Rio’s headline viewpoints.
Evening: Explore a nearby neighborhood for dinner, or choose a well-reviewed samba venue with transport arranged in advance.

Day 3: Sugarloaf Mountain, Santa Teresa and Lapa
Morning: Visit Sugarloaf Mountain for wide views across Guanabara Bay. If clouds hide the summit, swap this morning with another Rio activity.
Afternoon: Explore Santa Teresa, the Selarón Steps and Lapa at a comfortable pace. Choose the stops that interest you instead of rushing through every landmark.
Evening: Enjoy dinner or a well-reviewed samba performance, with transportation arranged in advance.
Day 4: Fly from Rio to Foz do Iguaçu
Choose a nonstop flight when available and allow generous transfer time in Rio. After arriving, check in near the center of Foz do Iguaçu or close to the national park. Use the remainder of the day to rest, organize park tickets and confirm the next morning’s transportation.
Day 5: Brazilian side of Iguaçu Falls
The Brazilian side gives broad, panoramic views of the waterfall system. Follow the main trail and leave time for the walkways near the largest cascades. A boat or wildlife experience can be added if operating conditions and your entry time allow, but the waterfalls should remain the priority.

Day 6: Argentinian side of Iguazú Falls
Start early for the border crossing to Argentina and plan a full day inside Iguazú National Park. The circuits bring you closer to the water and normally require more walking than the Brazilian side. Trail access can change with water levels and maintenance, so check the official park information shortly before your visit.
Do not schedule a same-day flight after this excursion. Border queues, weather and park transport can all add time. Stay overnight in Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazú and use Day 7 for departure.
Day 7: Flexible morning and departure
Keep the final morning flexible. Depending on your flight time, visit Parque das Aves near the Brazilian park, enjoy a quiet breakfast in Foz do Iguaçu or use the time as a buffer after two active waterfall days. Leave ample time for the airport and avoid adding another border crossing.
Where to stay
- Rio de Janeiro: Ipanema and Leblon offer a walkable beach base; Copacabana has a wide choice of hotels; Botafogo can be convenient for Sugarloaf.
- Foz do Iguaçu: Stay in town for restaurants and transport choices, or near the Brazilian park for an earlier start.
- Inside the Brazilian park: Hotel das Cataratas is the special-occasion option for immediate access to the setting.
What to book before you go
- Rio–Foz flights and airport transfers
