A seven-day route inspired by our journey through Tanzania’s Northern Circuit.

This seven-day Tanzania safari itinerary follows the sequence of our published journey through Arusha, Tarangire, Mto wa Mbu, Gibb’s Farm, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. It is a planning adaptation rather than an exact promise of wildlife sightings. Animals move freely, road conditions change and patience is part of every safari.

Trip Overview

Route: Arusha → Tarangire → Mto wa Mbu and Gibb’s Farm → Ngorongoro → Serengeti
Length: Seven safari days, plus international travel time
Style: Wildlife, landscapes, culture and comfortable pacing
Best for: First-time safari travelers who want fewer bases and meaningful time in each park

Before Day 1

Arrive in Arusha at least one night before the safari begins. Use that time to rest, meet the tour director or guide, confirm luggage limits and review the route. Our experienced Tour Director and small group of six shaped the ease and companionship of our journey.

Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire

Morning

Leave Arusha after breakfast and travel toward Tarangire National Park.

Afternoon

Begin with a game drive among baobabs, open woodland and the park’s elephant country.

Evening

Settle into camp or lodge, review the next day with your guide and keep the evening unhurried.

Day 2 — A Full Day in Tarangire

Morning

Start early, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife may be more active.

Afternoon

Continue slowly rather than chasing a checklist. Lions, elephants and the wider ecosystem shaped our own Tarangire chapters.

Evening

Return for dinner and a quiet safari night. Ugali and sunrise became part of our story here.

Day 3 — Tarangire at a Slower Pace

Morning

Use a second full day for a different area of the park and patient observation.

Afternoon

Ask your guide to balance major sightings with birds, landscapes and animal behavior.

Evening

Prepare for the transfer toward the Ngorongoro highlands.

Day 4 — Mto wa Mbu, Gibb’s Farm and Ngorongoro

Morning

Travel through Mto wa Mbu and make time for a respectful local or cultural experience arranged through a reputable operator.

Afternoon

Continue to Gibb’s Farm and the Ngorongoro highlands before reaching the crater rim.

Evening

Stay near the rim or at an appropriate nearby lodge and prepare for an early descent.

Day 5 — Ngorongoro Crater

Morning

Descend early with a licensed guide. Our crater experience included lions, rhinos, a serval and the changing food chain, but no specific sighting is guaranteed.

Afternoon

Continue the game drive, then leave space for a thoughtfully arranged Maasai cultural visit if it fits your route.

Evening

Return to the highlands, rest and organize luggage for the Serengeti transfer.

Day 6 — Fly or Transfer to the Serengeti

Morning

Consider a regional flight when the schedule and budget allow. Rough roads and long driving times can consume most of a day between parks.

Afternoon

Meet your Serengeti guide at the airstrip and begin a game drive en route to camp.

Evening

Settle into camp. Our arrival included elephants and the memorable “talking shower” of Chapter Eleven.

Day 7 — Serengeti and the Mara River

Morning

Start early for a full game-drive day, adapting the route to current wildlife reports rather than a fixed expectation.

Afternoon

Explore the Serengeti or Mara River area appropriate to the season. We saw migration animals and remarkable predator encounters, but a river crossing cannot be scheduled or guaranteed.

Evening

Return for a final dinner and reflect on the people as much as the sightings. Our group arrived as six travelers and left as friends.

Where to Stay

Choose areas before individual properties: Arusha for arrival, Tarangire for park access, the Ngorongoro rim or highlands for an early crater start, and a Serengeti camp positioned for your season. Ask what is included and how much daily driving each choice creates.

Getting Around

Use a reputable safari operator, an appropriate 4×4 vehicle and an experienced guide. For longer park-to-park transfers, compare the cost of a bush flight with the time and fatigue of driving. Confirm aircraft luggage limits before packing.

What to Book in Advance

  • Safari operator, vehicle type and guide arrangement
  • Park permits, conservation fees and accommodation
  • Regional flights and luggage allowance
  • Travel insurance and medical consultation
  • Any respectful cultural visit
