First-visit essentials
Choose the route before choosing the hotels
Give Cairo and Giza several days rather than treating the pyramids as a quick stop. Alexandria adds a different atmosphere without turning this route into a race across the whole country. Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise are possible extensions for a longer trip, rather than additions to this seven-day plan.
Make arrival easy
Our story describes a late-night arrival and hotel-arranged meet-and-assist. Ask your accommodation what the service includes, how to identify the representative and what happens if your flight is delayed. Arrange a confirmed pickup and keep the address offline.
Be specific about museums
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization houses the Royal Mummies Gallery. The Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir are different institutions; choose according to your interests and check each museum’s current booking and photography rules. See the NMEC Royal Mummies Gallery and official Grand Egyptian Museum ticketing.
Budget for the whole day
Ask whether a tour price includes transport, guide services, site admission, optional activities and gratuities. Keep smaller cash notes for incidental expenses; carry a backup payment method. A private guide can be useful for connecting the history rather than simply moving between photo stops.
Best time to visit
For a first trip with substantial outdoor sightseeing, our planning preference is the milder November–April period. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority describes that broad winter pattern in its Egypt climate overview. This is a seasonal guide, not a forecast: compare conditions separately for Cairo and coastal Alexandria. Protect early outdoor starts in hotter months, and pack a layer for evenings.
7-Day Itinerary
A suggested route to adapt to your dates and interests; it is not a record of an exact trip schedule.
- Day 1: Arrive in Cairo; allow time for airport formalities and rest. Keep the evening flexible.
- Day 2: Visit Giza’s pyramids and Sphinx with an early start; avoid stacking another long excursion afterward.
- Day 3: Choose a major museum and a relaxed Nile evening. Confirm the operator and departure details of any dinner cruise.
- Day 4: Explore Cairo at a slower pace: a neighborhood walk, another museum or a café afternoon, according to your interests.
- Day 5: Transfer to Alexandria. Treat the journey as part of the day and settle into your coastal base.
- Day 6: Enjoy Alexandria’s waterfront and selected heritage sights. Verify opening days before committing to a museum or library visit.
- Day 7: Depart from the airport that matches your ticket, or return to Cairo with a generous transfer buffer.
Where to stay and how to get around
Choose a Cairo base around your main sightseeing priorities and allow for city traffic. For Alexandria, compare the convenience of a waterfront location with the actual travel time to your selected sights. Confirm a reputable driver or current rail options before paying; do not assume a coastal excursion fits neatly between Cairo flights. Egypt’s official Alexandria guide introduces the city and its connections.
Entry and safety checks
Check nationality-specific entry requirements with the official Egypt e-Visa portal and the relevant Egyptian consulate; our own visa-on-arrival experience does not establish eligibility for every traveler. Review your government’s current Egypt travel advisory for the precise areas on your route. Check insurance coverage, carry your accommodation contact and follow museum and site instructions.
Booking and packing prompts
Reserve your initial airport transfer and accommodation first, then confirm guides and museum tickets against the final route. Pack comfortable closed footwear, sun protection, a light layer, charging equipment and any medicines in your hand luggage. Keep passport, booking and insurance copies available offline.
Final departure countdown
A week before departure, reconfirm pickups and guide inclusions. Two days before, check forecasts, site opening notices and the Cairo–Alexandria transfer. On departure day, check flight status and keep arrival instructions accessible without mobile data.
Questions before you go
Can I add a Nile cruise to this week?
This route is built around Cairo, Giza and Alexandria. Add days for a Luxor–Aswan cruise and its transfers, or replace Alexandria with a separately planned Nile itinerary.
