4-Day Istanbul Itinerary: History, Bosphorus & Two Continents

This four-day Istanbul itinerary balances imperial history, markets, food and the Bosphorus without turning the city into a checklist. It draws inspiration from our personal journey while leaving space for your own discoveries.
Trip overview
Length: Four full days
Best for: First-time visitors interested in history, food and city atmosphere
Pace: Active but balanced
Base: Sultanahmet, Karaköy, Galata or the Bosphorus corridor
Day 1 — Arrival, waterfront and first impressions
Afternoon
Settle into your hotel and keep the first day light. Walk along the waterfront, learn how your neighborhood connects to the tram and ferries, and allow the Bosphorus to introduce the city.
Evening
Choose an unhurried Turkish dinner with a city or water view. On our trip, the New Mosque and the Bosphorus helped establish Istanbul’s sense of place immediately.
Day 2 — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar
Morning
Begin early in Sultanahmet with Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Both are active religious places, so check current visitor access and prayer times and dress respectfully.
Afternoon
Continue through the Historic Peninsula, then devote several hours to the Grand Bazaar. Browse first, compare quality and keep negotiation friendly.
Evening
Stay in the area for dinner. We enjoyed Turgut Kebab Restaurant with a rooftop view toward the Blue Mosque, followed by tea and baklava.
Day 3 — Topkapi Palace and modern Istanbul
Morning
Give Topkapi Palace most of the morning and early afternoon. Add time for the Harem and major collections rather than rushing through the complex.
Afternoon
Cross toward Karaköy or Galata for cafés, streets and waterfront atmosphere. Rest before the evening if you plan to stay out late.
Evening
Experience Taksim Square and nearby streets after dark. Our final evening there stretched late into the night because the city remained energetic and social.
Day 4 — Asia and the Bosphorus
Morning
Take a ferry to the Asian side. Choose one or two waterfront neighborhoods instead of trying to cover everything. We visited Kaptan Paşa Camii and Rum Mehmed Paşa Mosque and stopped for Turkish coffee at Nevmekân Sahil.
Afternoon
Make the Bosphorus the focus. A ferry ride or cruise reveals palaces, mosques, mansions and the relationship between Europe and Asia.
Evening
Finish with a memorable dinner or dessert. Our trip included Bosphorus-view dining at Katibim and late-night künefe, baklava and tea at Hafız Mustafa.
Getting around
Walk within each district, use trams and metro services for longer land journeys, and include ferries as both transport and sightseeing. Istanbul’s hills and traffic make geographically grouped days much easier.
What to book in advance
