How many days should you spend in Istanbul?
Allow at least four full days for a first visit. This gives you time for the Historic Peninsula, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, a Bosphorus experience and at least one neighborhood on the Asian side without compressing everything into a checklist. Five days is even better if you enjoy long meals, shopping or unstructured wandering.
Where to stay
The best base depends on your priorities. Sultanahmet is convenient for major historic sights. Karaköy and Galata work well for restaurants, waterfront access and a more contemporary atmosphere. The Bosphorus corridor can feel special for views and ferry access. Organize the city by area
- Historic Peninsula: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and nearby historic streets.
- Eminönü and the Grand Bazaar: markets, the New Mosque, food and shopping.
- Karaköy, Galata and Taksim: waterfront life, cafés, restaurants and modern Istanbul.
- Asian side: ferry views, quieter mosques, waterfront neighborhoods and a different rhythm.
- The Bosphorus: allow dedicated time on the water rather than treating it as transportation alone.
Mosque etiquette
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are active places of worship. Dress modestly, carry a light scarf when useful, speak quietly and follow instructions at the entrance. Visitor access can change around prayers and religious observances, particularly on Fridays, so check current official information shortly before visiting.
Getting around
Istanbul is large, hilly and busy. Combine walking with trams, metro services and ferries. Group each day geographically and avoid crossing the city repeatedly. Ferries are also part of the experience: moving between Europe and Asia gives you some of the city’s best views.
Food experiences worth making time for
Our meals included rooftop kebabs at Turgut Kebab Restaurant, Turkish coffee at Nevmekân Sahil, a Bosphorus-view dinner at Katibim, late-night desserts at Hafız Mustafa and a theatrical lunch at Hatay Medeniyetler Sofrası. Beyond specific restaurants, leave room for Turkish breakfast, tea, coffee, baklava, künefe and an unhurried meal beside the water.
Shopping at the Grand Bazaar
Give the bazaar time. Browse before buying, ask questions and keep negotiation friendly. Compare quality and price across shops, especially for higher-value purchases. The conversation is part of the experience, but you should never feel pressured to buy.
Entry and booking checks
Passport and visa requirements depend on nationality and can change. Check the official Republic of Türkiye e-Visa website and your government’s travel guidance before departure. Reconfirm attraction schedules and worship-related access close to your visit rather than relying on an old itinerary.
