Best Time to Visit Antarctica

Most visitors travel to the Antarctic Peninsula during the austral summer, generally from November through March. There is no single perfect month: changing ice, wildlife cycles, daylight and voyage availability create different experiences throughout the season.

- November: dramatic snow and ice, early-season landscapes and fewer departures.
- December–January: very long daylight, peak summer activity and strong demand.
- February–March: later-season wildlife opportunities, more open water in many areas and gradually shorter days.
November: snow and early-season atmosphere
Early voyages may encounter more snow-covered landing sites and sculptural sea ice. Conditions can be variable and access is always determined by the expedition team.
December and January: maximum daylight
Midsummer brings exceptionally long days and broad voyage availability. It is also a popular period, so preferred ships, cabin categories and flight arrangements can sell early.
February and March: a changing seascape
Later summer can offer a different balance of open water and wildlife activity. The experience varies by year and location, so treat month-by-month wildlife claims as possibilities rather than guarantees.
What the weather was like for us
We experienced five consecutive sunny days on the peninsula and sometimes felt warmer than we had expected. That was fortunate weather, not a promise. Antarctic conditions can change quickly, and wind often matters as much as the temperature.
How to choose your month
Choose according to your preferred ship, route, activities, budget and tolerance for uncertainty. The Australian Antarctic Program notes that the best conditions for Antarctic Peninsula tourism generally occur from mid-November to early March.
