The best time for a Tanzania safari is generally June through October for drier conditions and easier wildlife viewing. However, Tanzania rewards different priorities throughout the year: the southern Serengeti and Ndutu are especially important during the calving period, green-season landscapes can be beautiful, and the Great Migration is a moving natural cycle rather than a scheduled event.

June Through October — The Dry Season
Drier conditions often concentrate animals near dependable water and make unpaved roads easier to manage. This is a strong window for Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, but it is also popular. Lodges, camps, experienced guides and regional flights can fill early.
Cool mornings and evenings still require layers. Dust protection for cameras and electronics becomes particularly useful.
January Through March — Calving Season
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area can become a focus as wildebeest gather and give birth on the short-grass plains. Newborn animals also attract predators. Exact timing depends on rainfall and grazing conditions, so choose a camp and guide that can adapt to current wildlife movement.
November and December — Short Rains
Short rains can refresh the landscape without necessarily disrupting every day. Visitor levels and prices may be more favorable than during peak dry-season dates, although roads and wildlife distribution remain weather-dependent.
March Through May — Long-Rain Period
This is often the wettest and quietest part of the safari calendar. Landscapes are green, birdlife can be excellent and some properties offer lower pricing. Heavy rain may affect roads, airstrip operations and game-drive routes, and some seasonal camps close. Confirm logistics carefully before choosing this period.
Choosing the Season by Park
Tarangire
The dry months are especially popular because wildlife often gathers around permanent water. During greener months, the landscape changes and animals may be more dispersed.
Ngorongoro
Crater wildlife viewing is possible throughout the year. The official Ngorongoro Conservation Area guidance notes that dry-season animals concentrate around permanent water, while the rainy season brings activity to the short-grass plains. Crater access is regulated and visitors must follow current guide and vehicle rules.
Serengeti
Choose the part of the Serengeti according to the season rather than assuming one camp works equally well all year. The migration’s location changes with rain and grazing, and no operator can promise a river crossing.
What Our Journey Taught Us
Near the Mara River, we saw migration animals and learned that waiting is part of the experience. The herds did not perform on command. Lions, leopards, elephants, changing weather and the conversations inside our vehicle became as memorable as the migration itself. Peak dry-season and migration dates usually bring stronger demand. Book earlier if you need a particular camp, private vehicle, guide or bush flight. Green-season pricing can be attractive, but compare closures, road time and cancellation terms rather than price alone.
