Savannah’s food is part of the journey: Southern comfort dishes, seafood, coffee stops and riverfront dining all fit naturally into a day spent exploring the Historic District. This guide begins with the places we personally visited, then adds clearly identified general planning guidance.

Gallery Espresso — coffee beside Chippewa Square

Gallery Espresso made an easy first stop while we enjoyed the atmosphere around Chippewa Square. Its official site describes it as Savannah’s oldest coffee shop, operating since 1993, with coffee and baked pastries in the Historic Downtown District. It works well before a morning walk through the squares.

The Public Kitchen & Bar — our shrimp and grits lunch

We chose The Public Kitchen & Bar specifically for shrimp and grits, and the dish lived up to our expectations: creamy grits, flavorful shrimp and a satisfying expression of Southern comfort food. We arrived shortly before the main lunch rush and were seated without a long wait; a line had formed by the time we left.

The restaurant’s official site currently identifies it as first come, first served rather than reservation-based. Policies and hours can change, so check directly before visiting.

What to eat in Savannah

• Shrimp and grits: a Lowcountry staple and the standout dish from our visit.
• Seafood: look for seasonal coastal fish, shrimp, oysters and crab, while checking current sourcing and preparation.
• Southern comfort food: fried chicken, biscuits, greens and other regional dishes appear across casual and more refined menus.
• Pralines and sweets: River Street and the Historic District offer many dessert and confectionery stops.
• Coffee and pastries: useful for building a relaxed pause into a walking itinerary.

Where to plan meals

Historic District and the squares

This is the most convenient area for combining lunch with sightseeing. A centrally located meal can sit naturally between the squares, the cathedral, Jones Street and Forsyth Park.

City Market and Broughton Street

These central areas provide a broad selection of casual meals, snacks and evening options. They are useful when a group wants flexibility rather than one destination restaurant.

River Street and Plant Riverside

Choose this area when river views and atmosphere are as important as the meal. We explored Plant Riverside and the waterfront, but we did not document a restaurant meal there; any dining choice in this area should therefore be treated as general planning rather than a firsthand Triyana Diaries recommendation.

Practical dining advice

• Check the restaurant’s own website on the day you visit; hours, menus and service policies change.
• Reserve popular dinner restaurants where reservations are accepted, especially on spring weekends and during major events.
• For first-come restaurants, arrive before the main lunch or dinner rush and keep a nearby alternative.
• Allow more time than a standard meal if you are visiting during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations or another major event.
• Tell the restaurant about allergies and dietary requirements directly rather than relying only on an online menu.
• Avoid scheduling every meal tightly. Savannah rewards spontaneous coffee, dessert and riverfront stops.
