Where Old Friendships Found Their Way Home Again
Some journeys are about discovering new places. Others are about rediscovering the people who shaped who we became.
For years, life had taken each of us in different directions.
Careers, families, responsibilities, and countries had quietly replaced the carefree days of school. Yet, somehow, one message turned into another, plans came together, and before long we found ourselves back in Ahmedabad—reuniting after years apart.
It was amazing how little had changed.

The hairstyles may have been different, a few grey hairs had appeared, and our conversations had shifted from exams and cricket to children, careers, and travel, but within minutes it felt as though we had simply picked up where we had left off.
There was laughter before introductions were even complete.
Stories that everyone remembered differently.
The same old jokes that somehow were still funny.
For two days, time seemed to pause.
A City Worth Rediscovering
Ahmedabad turned out to be the perfect setting for our reunion.
Rich in history yet full of modern energy, the city offered plenty of reasons to slow down and explore together.

Our first stop was Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived during one of India’s most important chapters in history.
Walking through the peaceful grounds reminded us that some of history’s greatest movements began in remarkably simple surroundings. The quiet atmosphere encouraged reflection—a fitting contrast to the excitement of reconnecting with old friends.

From there we visited the magnificent Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar. Its intricate carvings, beautiful gardens, and peaceful surroundings made it one of the highlights of the trip. Beyond its stunning architecture, the temple offers a sense of calm that stays with you long after you leave.
Another memorable stop was Adalaj Stepwell, an extraordinary five-story structure built more than five centuries ago. Descending through its beautifully carved pillars and symmetrical galleries felt like stepping into another era. It remains one of Gujarat’s finest examples of architecture and engineering.

As evening arrived, we headed to the Sabarmati Riverfront, where families, joggers, cyclists, and visitors gathered along the beautifully developed promenade. Watching the sunset over the river while continuing conversations that had started decades earlier was one of those simple travel moments that stays with you.
The Flavours of Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is a paradise for anyone who enjoys authentic street food.
Our evenings naturally revolved around food—and conversations that seemed to have no ending.
No visit is complete without experiencing Manek Chowk, where the marketplace transforms after sunset into one of India’s most vibrant street food destinations. The atmosphere comes alive with countless food stalls serving everything from local Gujarati favorites to creative desserts, making it impossible to leave hungry.
And, of course, we couldn’t leave Gujarat without tasting the city’s famous Das Khaman Dhokla—light, fluffy, and bursting with flavour. Sometimes the simplest dishes become the ones you remember the most.
Every meal became another opportunity to relive old memories and create new ones.
An Evening We Will Never Forget
The most memorable experience of our reunion didn’t happen at a famous monument or a bustling marketplace.
It happened around a family dining table.
One of our dear friends invited us to his home for dinner, giving us the opportunity to meet his wonderful family—his wife, their two children, and his mother.
It transformed our reunion from simply reconnecting with old classmates into becoming part of each other’s lives once again.
Like so many Indian homes, the evening wasn’t just about the food. It was about stories, laughter, shared memories, and meeting the families we had heard about but never truly known.
That evening beautifully captured something we often forget.
Places impress us.
People stay with us.
Our Home Away from Home
For our stay, we chose the Renaissance Ahmedabad Hotel, which provided a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the city. Whether heading out early to discover Ahmedabad’s historic landmarks or returning late after enjoying its famous street food, it was the perfect place to relax and recharge.
Reflections
Some reunions are carefully planned.
Others simply feel meant to happen.
Ahmedabad gave us far more than beautiful monuments, remarkable architecture, and unforgettable food.
It reminded us that genuine friendships are timeless.
Years may pass without seeing one another, but true friends have a remarkable way of making it feel as though no time has passed at all.
As we hugged goodbye and returned to our different corners of the world, we carried home much more than photographs.
We carried renewed friendships, shared laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Because in the end, the greatest journeys aren’t measured by the places we visit.
They’re measured by the people we share them with.
“Some cities are remembered for their monuments. Others are remembered for the people you shared them with. Ahmedabad became unforgettable because it gave us both.”
