A Weekend of Desert Adventures, Mountain Valleys, and Unforgettable Friendships
Some destinations impress you with iconic landmarks. Others surprise you with experiences you never expected.
Dubai managed to do both.
What made this trip even more special was that it was shared with close friends—proof that the best journeys are often measured not only by the places you visit, but by the people you experience them with.
Arrival in the City of Lights
We landed in Dubai on a Wednesday evening and, after a smooth immigration process, made our way to the JW Marriott Marina, our home for the next few days.
Although it was already late, none of us was quite ready to call it a night. The excitement of finally being together in Dubai deserved a proper celebration. Fortunately, the hotel’s poolside bar was still open, allowing us to enjoy a cold beer while catching up, laughing, and planning the adventures that lay ahead.
It was the perfect start.
A Surprise Waiting in Ras Al Khaimah
The next morning, one of our friends who lives in Dubai generously offered to show us a side of the UAE that many visitors never experience.
Most travelers associate the Emirates with glittering skyscrapers, luxury shopping, and endless desert landscapes.
I certainly did.
As we drove north, we made a brief stop in Sharjah, where we explored part of the city and enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant before continuing toward Wadi Shahhah in Ras Al Khaimah.
Nothing prepared me for what came next.
As the road climbed into the mountains, the landscape transformed dramatically. Rugged peaks, winding valleys, and rocky terrain stretched before us. I never imagined finding mountains like these in the United Arab Emirates.
We arrived just in time for sunset.
Watching the golden light slowly disappear behind the mountains while standing in the peaceful valley was one of those unexpected travel moments that stay with you long after returning home.
It reminded me that every country has hidden chapters beyond the postcards.
With a two-hour drive back to Dubai ahead of us, we reluctantly left as darkness settled over the mountains, excited for another adventure waiting the following day.
Discovering Dubai Marina
Friday morning began with an excellent breakfast at the JW Marriott Marina.
The spread was impressive, offering everything from Middle Eastern specialties to international favorites—a perfect way to fuel another busy day.
Before heading out, we enjoyed a leisurely walk through Dubai Marina and along Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR).
The contrast between the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf and the city’s modern skyline was spectacular. Luxury yachts floated quietly in the marina while joggers, cyclists, and families enjoyed the beautiful waterfront.
Dubai certainly knows how to create stunning public spaces.
A Visit to the Legendary Gold Souk
No visit to Dubai feels complete without stopping at the famous Deira Gold Souk.
Walking through its narrow lanes lined with hundreds of jewelry shops is an experience in itself. Gold, diamonds, precious stones, and elaborate handcrafted designs sparkle from every storefront.
Some of us arrived with very specific shopping lists from our wives, and naturally, those assignments became our highest priority.
Mission accomplished.
Conquering the Desert
That afternoon, we were picked up from our hotel for one of Dubai’s signature experiences—the Desert Safari.
After driving toward the desert outside the city, our first stop was an ATV adventure.
It was my first time riding an ATV across sand dunes, and I absolutely loved it. Driving across soft desert sand requires a completely different technique, making the experience both exciting and surprisingly challenging.
Then came the highlight of the day.
We climbed into a Toyota SUV for what locals simply call dune bashing.
It sounds harmless.
It isn’t.
Our driver accelerated across towering dunes before suddenly dropping down steep slopes, climbing impossible-looking hills, and sliding sideways across the sand with incredible precision. Sitting in the front seat made every climb, turn, and descent feel even more intense.
The drivers know these dunes so well that they somehow push the vehicle right to the limit without ever losing control.
Photos and videos simply cannot capture what it feels like.
If you ever visit Dubai and are wondering whether the desert safari is worth it, my answer is simple:
Do it.
At least once.
Sunset in the Arabian Desert
As thrilling as the ride was, the desert became even more magical once the engines stopped.
We watched the sun slowly sink below the endless sea of golden dunes, painting the sky with shades of orange, pink, and deep red.
There is something incredibly peaceful about standing in complete silence surrounded by nothing but sand stretching to the horizon.
It was one of the most beautiful sunsets of the entire trip.
Arabian Hospitality Under the Stars
As darkness settled across the desert, we arrived at a traditional Bedouin-style camp.
The evening featured live Arabic music, traditional dance performances, delicious local cuisine, and warm Emirati hospitality.
Sitting beneath the night sky while enjoying authentic Arabic food, listening to traditional music, and sharing stories with friends created an atmosphere that was difficult to describe.
It wasn’t just dinner.
It was an experience.
One that beautifully showcased the culture and hospitality of the region.
Shopping, Fine Dining, and Iconic Views
Saturday was dedicated to exploring modern Dubai.
We spent the morning wandering through the enormous Dubai Mall, where shopping blends seamlessly with world-class architecture, entertainment, and attractions.
For lunch, we headed to At.mosphere, located inside the iconic Burj Khalifa.
Dining high above the city while looking out over Dubai’s incredible skyline made the meal just as memorable as the food itself.
Later that evening, we visited the legendary Burj Al Arab for cocktails.
The building itself is an architectural masterpiece, but the panoramic views from the top made the experience truly unforgettable.
Watching the sun begin to set over the Arabian Gulf while enjoying a drink with friends was the perfect way to celebrate our final evening in Dubai.
A Perfect Farewell
For our last dinner, we wanted something authentically local.
Following our Dubai friend’s recommendation, we made reservations at the charming Arabian Tea House.
Hidden away from the city’s towering skyscrapers, the restaurant offered a completely different side of Dubai.
The peaceful courtyard, traditional décor, warm hospitality, and flavorful Emirati cuisine created the perfect ending to our journey.
It wasn’t a lavish dinner.
It was a meaningful one.
Surrounded by friends, sharing great food, reflecting on unforgettable experiences, and realizing how quickly the weekend had passed.
The next morning, it was time to head home.
Reflections
Dubai surprised me.
Yes, it has some of the world’s tallest buildings, luxury hotels, and extravagant shopping experiences.
But beyond the glamour lies another side—mountain valleys, endless deserts, traditional neighborhoods, rich culture, and genuine hospitality.
From watching the sunset over the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah to racing across desert dunes, strolling through Dubai Marina, exploring the Gold Souk, dining above the city, and ending our journey with authentic Emirati cuisine, every day offered something entirely different.
Most importantly, this trip reminded me that travel becomes even more memorable when shared with good friends.
The places are extraordinary.
The memories become priceless because of the people beside you.
