Half Moon Bay Travel Hub: Coastal Walks, Golf & a Relaxed Weekend
Triyana Diaries · Practical travel planning
Reviewed October 2, 2026 · Based on our linked firsthand story and the official sources below.
In brief: Half Moon Bay works best when the coast sets the pace. Our weekend combined oceanfront golf, a spa morning, long walks and meals worth lingering over. This hub helps you build a flexible two-night escape without turning every hour into a reservation.
- Suggested pace: 2 nights and a full weekend
- Core route: the coast, downtown and Pillar Point Harbor
- Best suited to: walking, golf, dining and time to unwind
- Planning priority: coastal weather and realistic driving time

First-visit essentials
Choose the weekend you want
Decide whether this is primarily a walking, golf, spa or dining trip. Pick one booked highlight per day and leave space for the coast. The route below is a suggestion; our own long Saturday walk is described in the story.
Choose a base that fits your budget
We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. Visitors can also compare inns, town hotels and harbor accommodations through the local visitors’ bureau. Check parking and resort fees, cancellation terms and whether you need a car for your chosen meals.
Walk within your comfort level
Choose a coastside trail segment that matches your mobility and available time. Do not treat our approximately ten-mile day as a requirement. Recheck the route, accessible access points and any closures before setting off.
Reserve the scarce experiences
Book desired tee times, spa appointments and special dinners early enough to keep the rest of the weekend flexible. Our Palo Alto dinner was a separate inland outing; allow a dedicated drive rather than treating it as a nearby Coastside stop.
Best time to visit
There is no single guaranteed sunny month on this coast. Summer can bring cool marine air and fog; layers matter even when inland forecasts look warm. The visitors’ bureau describes those patterns in its Coastside fact sheet. Our practical preference is to compare spring or early fall dates for a walking weekend, then check the actual forecast. Autumn festivals can change traffic and availability; winter plans need flexibility for rain, wind and surf conditions.
Weekend Itinerary
A suggested route to adapt to your dates and interests; it is not a record of an exact trip schedule.
- Friday: Arrive, check in and take a short walk if daylight and conditions allow. Keep dinner simple if the flight or drive is late.
- Saturday morning: Choose a manageable Coastal Trail walk, a reserved round of golf or a spa session. Meet for a leisurely lunch.
- Saturday afternoon: Explore downtown or Pillar Point Harbor, or stay close to your accommodation and slow down. Save time to prepare for a special dinner.
- Sunday: Enjoy breakfast and a final short walk if your departure allows. Protect the airport or onward-drive buffer rather than adding another distant stop.
Where to stay and how to get around
A car gives flexibility between the coast, town, harbor and any inland dinner. Compare the real transfer from your airport and allow extra time for weekend traffic and bad weather. If traveling without a car, establish a realistic transport plan with your accommodation before arrival. The Half Moon Bay visitors’ bureau lists local areas, lodging and dining.
Beach, trail and safety checks
Check the Half Moon Bay State Beach advisories and visitor rules before visiting. Stay back from cliff edges, follow closures and keep clear of dangerous surf. Dogs are not permitted on the state beach itself; check the rules for the specific trail or campground you plan to use. Do not assume every beach access point has the same facilities or accessibility.
Booking and packing prompts
Confirm lodging, parking and the one or two experiences that matter most. Pack walking shoes, a windproof layer, sun protection and a small day bag; add wet-weather clothing when the forecast calls for it. Keep a shorter walk and an indoor alternative ready.
Final departure countdown
A week before arrival, confirm tee times, spa and dinner bookings. Two days before, check the coastal forecast, beach notices and traffic plans. On departure day, check road and flight conditions before committing to one last stop.
Questions before you go
Can I visit as a day trip?
Yes, but choose one coast or town cluster and leave a generous return buffer. Two nights make it easier to enjoy a slower pace without placing every activity between two drives.
Is the beach a warm-water swimming destination?
Plan this trip around coastal scenery, walks and dining. Do not assume calm or safe swimming conditions; use posted warnings and current state-park guidance.
