Half Moon Bay

A Weekend Along California’s Rugged Coast

There are some destinations where the itinerary matters.

And then there are places like Half Moon Bay, where the destination itself encourages you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy the moment.

Our weekend getaway with my wife to California’s picturesque coastline became exactly that—a perfect balance of relaxation, incredible dining, breathtaking scenery, and reconnecting with friends.

A Delayed Arrival

Like many journeys, ours didn’t begin exactly as planned.

Airline delays meant that instead of arriving in San Francisco around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, we didn’t land until nearly 9:30 p.m. By the time we reached The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, checked in, and settled into our room, it was already close to 11:00 p.m.

We had hoped to enjoy our first Pacific sunset from the dramatic cliffs surrounding the resort, but that moment would have to wait until another day.

Sometimes travel reminds us that not every plan unfolds perfectly—and that’s part of the adventure.

Two Perfect Mornings, Two Different Experiences
Friday morning began with each of us enjoying Half Moon Bay in our own way.

I headed to the legendary Half Moon Bay Golf Links, where every hole offered sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. The early morning sunshine, cool ocean breeze, and dramatic coastline made it one of those rounds where the scenery was every bit as enjoyable as the golf itself.

Meanwhile, my wife chose a slower pace, spending the morning at the Ritz spa, embracing the tranquility and exceptional hospitality the resort is known for.

Different experiences.

The same destination.

And both equally memorable.

Lunch with an Ocean View

By early afternoon we reunited for lunch at Ocean Terrace, perched above the golf course with spectacular views of the Pacific.

The leisurely lunch perfectly matched the relaxed coastal atmosphere.

We enjoyed creamy clam chowder served with warm sourdough bread, a delicious shrimp, lobster and artichoke dip with grilled pita, while my wife chose a fresh poke bowl accompanied by a glass of wine. We finished the meal with cappuccinos, lingering just a little longer to soak in the incredible scenery.

The weather transformed throughout the afternoon. What started as a cool, cloudy coastal morning gradually gave way to brilliant California sunshine, revealing the rugged cliffs and sparkling blue waters in all their beauty.

After lunch we explored the walking paths surrounding the resort, eventually making our way down toward the beach. With waves crashing below and the fresh ocean air all around us, it was impossible not to slow down and appreciate the peaceful surroundings.

An Evening of Friendship and Fine Dining

Upscale restaurant Protegé with outdoor tables and diners

That evening we drove to Palo Alto to catch up with one of our local friends, who had arranged a very special dinner at Protégé, a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Over the next four hours we experienced an exceptional seven-course tasting menu, with every dish beautifully presented and thoughtfully paired with white and red wines.

What impressed us just as much was how accommodating the restaurant was in preparing equally creative and delicious alternatives for vegetarian and pescatarian dietary preferences.

As remarkable as the food was, the evening belonged to the conversations.

The laughter.

The memories.

The stories shared among friends who hadn’t seen each other in far too long.

Time seemed to disappear, and before we knew it, it was nearly midnight when we finally returned to the Ritz.

Walking the Coast

Saturday began with breakfast at The Conservatory, the Ritz-Carlton’s signature restaurant.

Well-fed and energized, we set out on the spectacular Coastal Trail.

The trail quickly became one of the highlights of the weekend.

For miles, the Pacific stretched endlessly beside us while dramatic cliffs, rolling green landscapes, and wildflowers created postcard-worthy scenery around every turn.

Along the way we encountered beautiful horses peacefully grazing in nearby fields, spotted a curious cat wandering as though trying to find its way home, and admired the stunning coastal landscape that makes Half Moon Bay so unique.

After walking nearly five miles, we rewarded ourselves with coffee at Rebyl before browsing the lively local farmers market.

Eventually we made the return journey, completing nearly ten miles on foot before arriving back at the hotel just in time for a well-earned late lunch.

A Wedding by the Pacific

Later that afternoon we noticed something unexpected unfolding on the resort grounds.

The Ritz was hosting an elegant Indian wedding overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Curious, we wandered over to admire the beautifully decorated venue. Vibrant floral arrangements, elegant seating, and meticulous attention to detail transformed the oceanfront lawn into a spectacular setting.

The ceremony was scheduled to begin just before sunset, making the Pacific itself part of the celebration.

It was impossible not to smile while watching the final preparations. Sometimes travel surprises you with experiences you never planned to witness.

A Romantic Finale

To conclude our weekend, I had planned a romantic dinner at Navio, the Ritz-Carlton’s signature fine dining restaurant.

With panoramic views overlooking the Pacific, it was the perfect place to celebrate the weekend together.

As the sun slowly descended toward the horizon, golden light filled the dining room while waves crashed gently against the cliffs below.

There was no rush.

No schedule to follow.

Just exceptional cuisine, breathtaking scenery, and quiet moments together.

It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable weekend.

Heading Home

Sunday morning arrived far sooner than we would have liked.

We checked out before sunrise and left the Ritz early to catch our 8:00 a.m. flight from San Francisco International Airport. As we drove along the quiet coastline one final time, we reflected on how much we had experienced in just a few days.

From oceanfront golf and a rejuvenating spa experience to unforgettable meals, scenic coastal walks, reconnecting with dear friends, and witnessing a beautiful oceanfront wedding, Half Moon Bay reminded us that the best weekends aren’t measured by how many places you visit.

They’re measured by how present you are while you’re there.

We boarded our flight home feeling refreshed, grateful, and already looking forward to returning to this beautiful stretch of California’s coastline.

Travel Tips

  • Stay at least two nights to fully enjoy the relaxed pace of Half Moon Bay.
  • Book tee times at Half Moon Bay Golf Links well in advance.
  • The Ritz spa is worth setting aside a few hours for relaxation.
  • Walk the Coastal Trail—it’s one of Northern California’s most scenic coastal paths.
  • Ocean Terrace is perfect for a leisurely lunch overlooking the Pacific.
  • Rebyl is a wonderful stop for coffee after a morning walk.
  • Reserve Navio for a special evening, especially around sunset.
  • Dress in layers—even summer mornings along the California coast can be cool.
  • Bring sunscreen and a good pair of sunglasses. Even if the morning starts cool and cloudy, the afternoon sun along the coastline can become surprisingly intense. We experienced a beautiful sunny afternoon, and it’s easy to get sunburned while golfing, walking the Coastal Trail, or simply enjoying the ocean views without realizing it.
