Maldives Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

The Maldives can feel wonderfully simple once you reach your island: ocean, reef, meals and time to slow down. The planning before arrival deserves more attention. A resort may occupy its own island, and the transfer from Malé can be as important as the international flight.

How we reached the Maldives

We flew from Chicago to Doha and connected to Malé. From Malé, a roughly 40-minute seaplane journey took us to W Maldives. The transfer was not merely transportation; the aerial view of small islands surrounded by changing shades of blue became one of our first memorable experiences.

The seaplane transfer from Malé was part of the adventure.

Ask your resort how the transfer is arranged before purchasing international flights. Transfer type and timing depend on the island. At W Maldives, Marriott currently describes the seaplane transfer as mandatory and reservation-based. Verify the current schedule and price on the official hotel page.

How many nights to stay

Based on our experience, five to seven nights gives travelers time to settle into island life. A short stay can feel rushed after a long international journey and onward transfer. Our week allowed space for snorkeling, quiet mornings, resort activities, meals and completely unstructured afternoons.

Choosing an island and room

Start with the experience you want rather than the room photograph alone. Compare the island’s transfer, reef access, dining options, activities and meal-plan structure. We valued being able to walk around our island, use the gym and spa, choose among restaurants and bars, and reach the ocean directly from our villa.

Our overwater villa included a private infinity pool, direct ocean access and a glass floor panel. Marine life was visible below the villa throughout the day. We considered it a defining part of the trip, but it is a significant upgrade; choose it only if the experience fits your budget.

Activities worth planning

W Maldives supplied snorkeling equipment and an instructor during our stay. The guidance and safety equipment made the experience approachable for different confidence levels. The resort also offered scuba diving, jet skiing, paddleboarding, kayaking, sunset cruises and other water activities.

Do not schedule every hour. Some of our favorite memories came from walking the island, reading by the water, watching the sunset and listening to the ocean from our deck.

Arrival requirements

Maldives entry requirements can change. The Maldives government currently states that tourists receive a visa on arrival when they satisfy its entry conditions, including an acceptable passport, confirmed onward travel and accommodation. Foreign visitors must submit the official inbound Traveller Declaration within the stated period before arrival. Use only the official Maldives Immigration and IMUGA websites, and confirm the rules again shortly before departure.

First-trip checklist

  • Confirm the resort transfer before booking flights.
  • Allow enough time for the international journey and island transfer.
  • Compare room, meal and transfer costs together.
  • Pack reef-conscious sun protection and suitable swimwear.
  • Request a seaplane window seat when possible.
  • Reserve limited-capacity activities early.
  • Leave room in the schedule to slow down.
