A Week in Paradise Above the Indian Ocean
“Some places are visited. Others are experienced. The Maldives is undoubtedly the latter.”
Our week-long journey to the Maldives with my wife was one of those rare trips where reality exceeded every expectation. Crystal-clear turquoise waters, powder-soft beaches, extraordinary hospitality, and the luxury of slowing down combined to create an experience we’ll never forget.

The Journey to Paradise
Our adventure began with a flight from Chicago to Doha, followed by a connection to Malé, the capital of the Maldives.

From there, the journey became part of the adventure. A 40-minute seaplane flight carried us across the Indian Ocean to W Maldives. It was our first time flying in a seaplane, and looking out the window at countless tiny islands surrounded by brilliant shades of blue was unforgettable.

As soon as we landed, the resort’s General Manager and team were waiting at the dock to personally welcome every arriving guest. We later learned they greet every incoming seaplane this way. After a warm welcome, we were given a golf cart tour before settling into our villa.
An Island All to Itself

The Maldives is made up of more than a thousand coral islands, many occupied entirely by a single luxury resort. Resorts such as W, Taj, and Ritz-Carlton each have their own private island, creating an atmosphere of complete tranquility.
Although small enough to walk around in less than thirty minutes, our island offered everything imaginable—restaurants, bars, a spa, gym, tropical gardens, walking paths, and luxurious villas surrounded by the Indian Ocean.

We’ve been fortunate to visit beautiful beaches around the world, but the Maldives stood in a class of its own. The water was unbelievably clear, changing from emerald to deep turquoise throughout the day, while the powder-soft white sand felt almost untouched. Even after years of traveling, it remains one of the most spectacular beaches we have ever experienced.
Living Above the Ocean
Our overwater villa quickly became one of the highlights of the trip.

It featured a private infinity pool, direct access to the ocean, and a glass panel in the floor that allowed us to watch marine life swimming beneath our room.

The water was so clear that baby sharks, schools of white fish, and other colorful sea life were visible throughout the day. Standing on our deck often felt like watching a living aquarium.

At night, soft lights illuminated the crystal-clear water below, revealing colorful corals beneath the surface. Standing quietly on the deck listening to the gentle waves while watching the reef come alive was one of the most peaceful moments of the entire trip.
Stepping Outside Our Comfort Zones
The resort provided complimentary snorkeling equipment along with an instructor who guided guests to nearby coral reefs.
My wife immediately embraced the adventure.
I wasn’t nearly as confident.

Although I wore a life jacket, the deep water made me hesitant. My wife, despite having limited swimming experience, eagerly followed the instructor to explore the reef. Watching her step outside her comfort zone made me just as proud as seeing the beautiful marine life she described afterward.
Meanwhile, I stayed closer to shore, happily surrounded by hundreds of brilliant white fish swimming peacefully around me.

For guests looking for even more adventure, the resort also offers jet skiing, scuba diving, paddleboarding, kayaking, sunset cruises, and a variety of other water sports, making it easy to experience the Indian Ocean from every perspective.
Island Life
One of the Maldives’ greatest luxuries isn’t just its scenery—it’s the opportunity to slow down.

Most mornings began with peaceful walks around the island before enjoying breakfast freshly prepared by the resort’s chefs.

Our afternoons were wonderfully simple. We spent time at the gym, relaxed in our private pool, read by the water, or simply admired the ever-changing colors of the ocean.
The resort also organized memorable evening activities.

One night, the beach became an open-air movie theater where guests watched a film beneath a sky full of stars while waves rolled gently onto the shore.

Another evening featured a food festival showcasing international cuisine, fresh seafood, and local Maldivian specialties. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience different flavors while meeting fellow travelers.

As the sun began to set each evening, guests naturally gathered at the open-air bar overlooking the Indian Ocean. Watching the sky transform into shades of orange, pink, and purple before enjoying fresh seafood beneath the stars quickly became one of our favorite daily rituals.
Hospitality That Set a New Standard
Beautiful beaches may draw people to the Maldives, but exceptional people are what make a destination unforgettable.
As a Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador member who spends well over 100 nights each year at Marriott properties—and with more than 2,000 lifetime Marriott nights—I’ve experienced hospitality across countless Marriott hotels around the world.
Yet W Maldives was different.

Every interaction reflected genuine warmth, attention to detail, and a level of personalized service unlike anything I had experienced before.
Before leaving, I made it a point to personally thank the resort’s General Manager and share how impressed I was with the team. After thousands of Marriott nights across the globe, I can honestly say this was the finest hospitality I have ever experienced at any Marriott property.
Long after the turquoise waters and breathtaking sunsets fade into memory, it will be the people of W Maldives who remain one of the defining highlights of our journey.
Travel Tips
- Stay at least five to seven nights to fully embrace island life.
- An overwater villa is worth the experience if your budget allows.
- Request a window seat on the seaplane for spectacular aerial views.
- Even beginners should consider snorkeling—the instructors and safety equipment make it accessible.
- Don’t miss the resort’s evening activities, and if adventure calls, take advantage of the many water sports available.
Reflections
The Maldives reminded us that the best journeys aren’t always about seeing more—they’re about slowing down enough to truly appreciate where you are.
Whether watching baby sharks from our deck, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, enjoying fresh seafood beneath the stars, or simply listening to the rhythm of the Indian Ocean, every day felt wonderfully uncomplicated.
We arrived expecting beautiful beaches.
We left remembering the people, the peace, and a destination that exceeded every expectation.
