Aerial view of a Maldives island surrounded by turquoise water
The seaplane approach is part of the Maldives experience.

Seven days in the Maldives should feel spacious, not scheduled. This itinerary takes its rhythm from our own seven-night stay at W Maldives—then adds flexible planning guidance you can adapt to your resort, interests and arrival times.

Firsthand versus suggested: W Maldives, the seaplane arrival, our overwater villa, snorkeling, island walks, dining, outdoor movie, food festival and sunset bar come from our trip. The day-by-day order and optional activities are general planning guidance.

Trip overview

  • Length: Seven nights
  • Style: Relaxed island escape
  • Best for: Couples, honeymooners and travelers who want reef time, good food and room to slow down
  • Pace: One main experience a day, with generous unscheduled time

Day 1 — Arrival and the seaplane view

Morning or afternoon: Arrive in Malé and connect with your resort representative. Transfer arrangements vary, so confirm the meeting point, baggage allowance and departure window before traveling.

Later: Take the seaplane or speedboat to your island. Our roughly 40-minute seaplane flight to W Maldives revealed the atolls from above and made arrival feel like part of the adventure.

Evening: Check in, walk the island, watch the sunset and keep dinner easy. Avoid scheduling a major excursion on arrival day.

Day 2 — Settle into island life

Begin slowly. Explore the beach, pool, restaurants and pathways; learn where the reef-entry points and activity center are. If you are staying overwater, enjoy the villa rather than immediately filling the day. Finish with sunset drinks or a relaxed dinner.

Day 3 — House reef and snorkeling

Make this your water day. We spent time snorkeling in the clear lagoon and living reef around the island. Ask your resort about currents, safe entry points and whether a guided orientation is offered. Leave the afternoon open for rest, spa time or another swim.

Day 4 — Choose one signature experience

Select one activity that fits your travel style: a guided reef trip, diving, dolphin cruise, fishing, spa treatment or water sport. These are general suggestions, not experiences attributed to our trip. Book weather-sensitive activities early enough that they can be rescheduled if needed.

Day 5 — Food, culture and an unhurried evening

Let dining become the day’s focus. Our stay included memorable meals and a food festival that brought energy to the island. Your resort may offer a tasting menu, themed dinner or cooking experience. If an outdoor movie is scheduled—as it was during our stay—this is a lovely night to enjoy it.

Day 6 — Your completely free Maldives day

Do not over-plan the final full day. Return to the reef, read by the water, walk the island or spend uninterrupted time in your villa. A relaxed sunset bar evening became one of the defining rhythms of our trip.

Day 7 — One last swim and departure

Pack early enough to enjoy breakfast and a final look at the lagoon. Resort transfers are coordinated around international flights and weather, so follow the resort’s confirmed departure time rather than making independent assumptions.

What to book before arrival

  • International flights and resort transfer
  • Your preferred villa category and meal plan
  • High-priority spa, diving or special dining reservations
