10-Day Portugal Itinerary: Lisbon, Porto, Douro Valley and Algarve

This 10-day Portugal itinerary connects Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Porto, the Douro Valley, Tomar, Évora and the Algarve. It follows the route documented in our Portugal Christmas and New Year story, adapted into a practical plan that can work in any season.

Trip Overview

Route: Lisbon → Sintra and Cascais → Porto → Douro Valley → Tomar and Évora → Algarve → Lisbon

Day 1 — Arrive in Lisbon

Arrive in Lisbon, check in and keep the first day flexible. Triyana Diaries stayed at the Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa. Begin with an easy walk near Parque Eduardo VII and Avenida da Liberdade, then enjoy your first views across the city.

Day 2 — Historic Lisbon and the Tagus River

Explore Rossio Square, Santa Maria Maior, Praça do Comércio and São Vicente. Continue toward Belém for its historic church and the Monument to the Discoveries. Lisbon is hilly and paved with cobblestones, so comfortable, supportive shoes matter.

For a memorable meal, our trip included Monte Mar Lisboa overlooking the Tagus River. The Mediterranean sea bass became one of our favorite meals in Portugal.

Day 3 — Lisbon at a Slower Pace

Use the morning for neighborhoods, viewpoints and anything missed on Day 2. Leave time for cafés and spontaneous discoveries rather than filling every hour.

If visiting in December, explore the festive lights and seasonal markets. Our family enjoyed Wonderland Lisboa and the peaceful atmosphere on Christmas Day, but many businesses close for the holiday, so arrange meals and transportation in advance.

Day 4 — Sintra and Cascais, Then Porto

Depart early for Sintra and visit the colorful National Palace of Pena. Advance timed admission is strongly recommended. Continue to Cascais for its oceanfront promenade and relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Our private driver made it possible to combine these stops with the journey to Porto. Without a driver, keep Sintra and Cascais as a Lisbon day trip, then take a separate train to Porto the next morning. Portugal’s official tourism site provides practical guidance for visiting Sintra.

In Porto, Triyana Diaries stayed at the InterContinental Porto. End the evening with dinner and your first tasting of Port—including white Port, which became an unexpected favorite.

A private driver allowed our two families to connect cities and scenic stops without managing parking or luggage.

Day 5 — Douro Valley

Take a full-day trip into the Douro Valley. The terraced vineyards and river views deserve an unhurried day. Our experience included a tour and tasting at Croft Vintage Port Winery, followed by a river cruise.

Travel with a driver or organized tour if you plan to taste wine. Confirm winery appointments and cruise schedules in advance, particularly outside the summer season.

Day 6 — Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia

Explore Porto’s historic riverside districts, then cross into Vila Nova de Gaia for additional Port tastings and views back toward the city. Include the Atlantic coastline, Pergola da Foz and Felgueiras Lighthouse if time and weather allow.

Leave the evening open for dinner and a walk through Porto. During the Christmas season, the city lights added another layer to the experience.

Day 7 — Porto to the Algarve via Tomar and Évora

This is the itinerary’s longest travel day. With a private driver, stop in medieval Tomar, then continue to Évora for the Roman Temple and the Chapel of Bones inside the Church of São Francisco.

If traveling by train, this route is too ambitious for one day. Choose either Tomar or Évora as an overnight stop, or travel directly from Porto to the Algarve and visit Évora on a separate trip.

Continue to Albufeira. Triyana Diaries stayed at Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites, perched above the Atlantic.

Day 8 — Algarve Cliffs, Dolphins and Sea Caves

Begin with a walk along the cliffs, then take a boat trip for dolphin watching and Algarve sea caves if conditions are suitable. Our dolphin encounter and cave exploration became defining memories from Portugal.

Boat trips depend on ocean conditions. Book with a reputable operator, follow safety guidance and maintain a flexible alternative for windy or rough-weather days.

The Algarve was the place we most wished we had given additional time.

Day 9 — Algarve Morning and Return to Lisbon

Enjoy a relaxed final morning on the coast, then return to Lisbon. If possible, avoid scheduling a long ground transfer immediately before an international flight.

Our trip returned to the Sheraton Lisboa for New Year’s Eve. Outside the holiday season, use the final evening for a favorite neighborhood, a celebratory meal or an early night before departure.

Day 10 — Departure

Depart Lisbon. Allow a comfortable airport buffer and confirm transportation in advance during Christmas, New Year’s and other public holidays.

Where to Stay

Lisbon: Avenida da Liberdade and central Lisbon provide convenient access to major sights. Triyana Diaries stayed at Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa.
Porto: The historic center and riverfront suit first-time visitors. We stayed at InterContinental Porto.
Algarve: Albufeira is practical for coastal excursions. Our stay was at Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites.

Getting Around

A private Mercedes van with a professional driver made our two-family trip easy and allowed flexible sightseeing between cities. Independent travelers can use Portugal’s rail network for Lisbon–Porto and other major connections, then add local tours or transfers. Food and Wine

Make time for seafood in Lisbon, Port tastings in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, and a winery visit in the Douro Valley. Try both ruby and white Port. Reserve important holiday meals well ahead, particularly on December 24, December 25 and December 31.

Practical Travel Tips

Spend at least three days in Lisbon and two to three days in Porto.
Give the Algarve two full days if your schedule allows; we wished we had stayed longer.
Wear comfortable shoes on Lisbon and Porto’s hills and cobblestones.
Keep weather flexibility for Douro cruises and Algarve boat tours.
Check public-holiday closures if traveling at Christmas or New Year.
For groups, compare the cost and convenience of a private driver with separate rail tickets and tours.
