Plan by region

Lisbon and Sintra

Allow several days for Lisbon’s neighborhoods, viewpoints and food, plus a separate day for Sintra. Spring and autumn provide comfortable walking weather. At Christmas, Lisbon feels festive, but holiday closures require advance planning.

Porto and the Douro Valley

Porto and the Douro are cooler and wetter than southern Portugal. Late spring and early autumn are excellent for combining the city with wine country. Winter can still be rewarding, as our journey showed, but river and road plans should remain flexible.

Évora and central Portugal

Historic inland stops add depth between the major cities and coast. Summer can be very hot, while spring, autumn and mild winter days are better suited to unhurried exploration.

The Algarve

Choose summer for the fullest beach-resort atmosphere, or shoulder season for warmth with lighter crowds. Winter is quieter and often better value, although some seasonal services and boat trips may operate less frequently.

Portugal in December: Lisbon or Porto?

Choose Lisbon for milder weather, larger holiday celebrations, convenient day trips and a broader selection of restaurants and attractions. Choose Porto for a more intimate atmosphere, dramatic riverside scenery and easy access to the Douro Valley. For a first Christmas trip, our preference is to combine both rather than choose only one, allowing more time in Lisbon if the trip is short.

Our specific holiday experience included mild days around 60–65°F (16–18°C), but that is not a weather guarantee. Rain is more likely in Porto and northern Portugal. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are public holidays, so confirm opening hours and reserve meals, celebrations and transportation in advance.
