Some destinations captivate you with history, others with breathtaking scenery. Portugal somehow manages to combine both, while wrapping everything in the warmth of Christmas traditions, festive lights, world-class cuisine, and remarkable hospitality.

As another year drew to a close, our two families set off on a journey to spend Christmas and New Year’s in Portugal, a country we had long wanted to experience during the holiday season.

What made this adventure especially meaningful was that it was our first international vacation with one of our dearest friends and his family. Little did we know, this trip would mark the beginning of many unforgettable journeys together in the years that followed. Portugal will always hold a special place in our hearts—not only for its beauty, but because it was where our shared travel tradition began.

Another pleasant surprise was Portugal’s weather. While much of Europe was experiencing winter’s chill, we enjoyed mild days in the low 60s°F (16–18°C), with a mix of sunshine and partly cloudy skies. The comfortable weather made exploring historic cities, vineyards, coastal towns, and Christmas markets a joy, requiring little more than a light jacket throughout our holiday.

Christmas Begins in Lisbon

We landed in Lisbon on the morning of December 23 and checked into the elegant Sheraton Lisboa Hotel & Spa, where we would spend the next three nights. Without wasting any time, we dropped off our luggage and headed straight out to discover Portugal’s beautiful capital.

For the next two days, Lisbon became our playground.

The city was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Every square sparkled with festive lights, giant Christmas trees, and seasonal decorations that made the historic streets feel even more magical.

Monument to the Discoveries

The mild sunshine made exploring Lisbon’s hills incredibly enjoyable. We spent entire days wandering the city’s charming streets, stopping frequently to admire panoramic views of the Tagus River while sharing stories, laughter, and excitement about everything we were discovering together.
Being our first trip as two families, every experience—from navigating Lisbon’s winding streets to posing for Christmas photos—felt even more memorable because we were experiencing it together.

A Seafood Lunch to Remember
On the afternoon of December 24, we enjoyed lunch at Monte Mar Lisboa, overlooking the Tagus River.

The restaurant offered spectacular waterfront views, but it was the food that truly stole the show.

The Mediterranean sea bass was simply exceptional—quite possibly the finest sea bass I have ever tasted. Perfectly prepared, incredibly fresh, and complemented by beautiful river views, it became one of the culinary highlights of our Portugal adventure.

Sometimes travel memories are created just as much by extraordinary meals as they are by famous landmarks.

Christmas Eve Above Lisbon
That evening we returned to the Sheraton for their grand Christmas Eve celebration.

The hotel hosted an elegant holiday dinner overlooking Lisbon’s sparkling skyline.

Excellent food, festive music, wonderful company, and panoramic views of the illuminated city created an unforgettable Christmas Eve.

A Peaceful Christmas Day

Christmas Day revealed another side of Lisbon.

With most businesses closed and locals spending time with family, the city became wonderfully peaceful.

Walking through Santa Maria Maior, we noticed birds calmly occupying the historic squares without being disturbed by heavy traffic or crowds. The quiet streets gave us plenty of opportunities to photograph Lisbon’s beautiful architecture and admire its Christmas decorations at a relaxed pace.

One particularly memorable stop was Jardins da Avenida da Liberdade, where we embraced one of the famous trees while making wishes for the coming year. The children especially loved participating in the tradition, each making heartfelt wishes for Santa Claus.

Later we visited Wonderland Lisboa, enjoying festive market stalls, local delicacies, amusement rides, and the joyful atmosphere that filled the city.

The Best Decision We Made

One of the best decisions we made was connecting with a highly recommended local guide before our trip. He helped us plan an efficient itinerary and arranged a Mercedes van with a professional driver for our entire journey, including airport transfers and travel between Portugal’s major cities.

Traveling as two families, this made our vacation completely stress-free. We never had to worry about driving, parking, or train schedules, allowing us to enjoy every scenic stop while benefiting from our guide’s local knowledge and insider recommendations. Looking back, planning our trip with a local expert was one of the best investments we made and played a big part in making our Portugal adventure so enjoyable.

Heading North to Porto

On December 26, we left Lisbon for Porto.

Rather than driving directly, we transformed the journey into another day of exploration.

Along the way, we visited Sintra, Estoril, and Cascais.

Sintra

The magnificent National Palace of Pena emerged through a light morning fog like something from a fairy tale.

The colorful palace, remarkable artwork, royal chambers, and centuries of Portuguese history made it one of the most impressive sites we visited.

Cascais

Our next stop was the beautiful coastal town of Cascais, whose oceanfront promenade and relaxed atmosphere provided a refreshing contrast to Lisbon.

By evening we reached Porto, checking into the elegant InterContinental Porto.

Dinner introduced me to a wonderful surprise.

Having always associated Port with its traditional ruby varieties, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy white Port so much.

To my surprise, it became my favorite.

The Beauty of the Douro Valley
The following day we explored the breathtaking Douro Valley.

Words simply cannot describe its beauty.

Rolling terraced vineyards stretched endlessly along the Douro River beneath pleasant winter skies.

The comfortable weather once again allowed us to spend hours outdoors enjoying every viewpoint.

Our visit included a tour and tasting at Croft Vintage Port Winery, followed by a relaxing river cruise through one of the world’s most spectacular wine regions.

Returning to Porto that evening, we admired the city’s Christmas lights before enjoying another wonderful dinner together.

Exploring Porto

December 28 was dedicated to Porto.

Highlights included:

Porto’s Atlantic coastline

Historic riverside districts

Vila Nova de Gaia

Crossing into Vila Nova de Gaia provided another opportunity to sample additional varieties of Portugal’s famous Port wine.

The conversations around those tasting tables remain some of our favorite memories from the trip.

Tomar and Évora

On December 29, we began our journey south.

One unexpected stop became one of the most memorable.

The medieval town of Tomar.

We visited out of curiosity because one of our close friends back home shares the last name “Tomar,” and we couldn’t resist surprising him with photographs from the town.

The magnificent castle overlooking the city made the detour completely worthwhile.

Continuing south, we reached Évora, where we explored the ancient Roman Temple and the remarkable Chapel of Bones inside the Church of São Francisco.

The chapel’s walls covered with centuries-old human bones created one of the most fascinating—and unsettling—experiences of our trip.

Outside, graceful peacocks wandering through the gardens provided a welcome contrast.

Algarve Paradise

That evening we checked into Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites in Albufeira.

Perched high above the Atlantic Ocean, the resort immediately became one of our favorites.

The next morning began with a peaceful walk along the cliffs before breakfast.

Once again, Portugal greeted us with sunshine, scattered clouds, gentle ocean breezes, and temperatures in the low 60s.

Later we boarded a boat tour to watch dolphins and explore the Algarve’s spectacular sea caves.

Watching dolphins swimming alongside our boat before entering the magnificent caves became one of the defining moments of the trip.

That evening we enjoyed drinks overlooking the Atlantic while watching one of the most beautiful sunsets of our vacation.

We all agreed that we wished we had planned several more days in the Algarve.

Welcoming the New Year

On December 31, we returned to Lisbon.

Leaving the Algarve was difficult, but we were excited for one final celebration together.

That evening we welcomed the New Year at the Sheraton.

Music filled the ballroom.

Champagne glasses were raised.

Friends laughed, danced, and celebrated together until well after midnight before heading directly to the airport the following morning for our journey home.

It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable holiday.

• Visit in late December for festive Christmas celebrations and pleasant weather (60–65°F / 16–18°C).
• For families or small groups, hiring a local guide with private transportation makes exploring Portugal effortless.
• Spend at least 3 days in Lisbon, 2–3 days in Porto, and don’t miss the Douro Valley and the Algarve.
• Try both red and white Port wine—you may discover a new favorite.
• Comfortable walking shoes are a must for Portugal’s charming cobblestone streets.

Final Thoughts

Portugal gave us everything we had hoped for—rich history, breathtaking coastlines, world-class wines, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality.

More importantly, it became the destination where two families took their very first international trip together, creating memories that would inspire many more adventures in the years ahead. From Christmas celebrations in Lisbon to vineyard views in the Douro Valley and sunsets along the Algarve coast, every moment strengthened a friendship that continues to grow with every journey.

Portugal will always hold a special place in our hearts—not just for its beauty, but because it was where our shared travel story began.
