Best Time to Visit Portugal: Weather, Crowds and Prices

The best time to visit Portugal is usually April through June or September through October. These months can provide a strong balance of pleasant sightseeing weather, active coastal services and lighter crowds than the busiest summer weeks.

For a route combining Lisbon, Porto, the Douro Valley and the Algarve, the answer varies by region. Northern Portugal is generally cooler and wetter than the south, while the Algarve enjoys a longer warm season. Portugal’s official tourism organization describes summers as typically hot and dry and notes that winter is colder in the north.

Spring: March Through May

Best for: City walks, flowers, scenic drives, wine country and moderate crowds.

Spring is one of Portugal’s most versatile seasons. Lisbon becomes comfortable for long days on its hills, Sintra’s landscape feels especially lush, and Porto and the Douro Valley emerge from the wetter winter months.

March can still bring rain and cool evenings, particularly in Porto and northern Portugal. April and May generally become warmer and busier. Easter and national holidays can increase demand, so compare dates before reserving hotels and attractions.

Crowds: Low to moderate, with holiday spikes
Prices: Usually below peak summer, rising through May
Watch for: Changeable northern weather and Easter demand

Summer: June Through August

Best for: Algarve beaches, boat trips, outdoor dining, festivals and long daylight hours.

Summer delivers Portugal’s liveliest coastal experience. Algarve resorts, restaurants and boat excursions operate at full pace, and warm, dry conditions are common. Lisbon and Porto also have energetic summer evenings.

July and August are the most demanding months for crowds and accommodation prices. Lisbon’s hills and inland stops such as Évora can feel very hot, while famous beaches and Sintra attractions become congested. Reserve hotels, trains and priority experiences well ahead.

Autumn: September Through November

Best for: Wine country, warm coastlines, photography, food and gradually lighter crowds.

September is among the strongest months for a multi-region Portugal trip. The Algarve can retain a summer atmosphere, Lisbon remains lively and the Douro Valley moves toward harvest season.

October often combines comfortable sightseeing with improved value, although rain becomes more likely in Porto and the north. November is quieter and can be economical, but shorter days and unsettled weather require more flexibility.

Prices: High in early September, often easing later
Watch for: Harvest demand in the Douro and autumn rain

Spring and autumn are especially well suited to an itinerary that crosses several regions.

Winter: December Through February

Best for: City breaks, festive celebrations, fewer crowds and travelers prioritizing value over swimming.

Our Portugal journey took place from December 23 through New Year’s Day. We experienced mild days around 60–65°F (16–18°C), with sunshine and partly cloudy skies. That was our specific experience, not a guarantee of future weather.

Lisbon’s Christmas lights, Wonderland Lisboa and hotel celebrations made the holiday memorable. Christmas Day was peaceful because many businesses were closed. Porto, the Douro Valley and Algarve were comfortable for outdoor exploring, but winter rain, wind or rough seas can affect cruises and boat trips.

When Are Portugal Prices Lowest?

Late autumn and winter often provide lower hotel prices in Lisbon and Porto, excluding Christmas, New Year and major events. Algarve pricing can fall substantially outside the summer, although some seasonal services operate less frequently.

For better value without giving up too much warm weather, compare late April, May, late September and October. Book earlier for Douro harvest dates, major festivals and specific Algarve resorts.

Crowds by Destination

Lisbon: Busy throughout much of the year, with summer and major holidays creating the greatest pressure.
Sintra: Popular and capacity-constrained. Arrive early and reserve Pena Palace admission.
Porto: Busiest in summer and during major events; rain is more likely outside the warm season.
Douro Valley: Demand rises during harvest season and for small winery appointments.
Algarve: Highly seasonal, with peak beach crowds and prices in July and August.

Christmas and New Year in Portugal

Portugal can be an excellent holiday destination, but planning matters. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are national public holidays, and many businesses close or reduce hours. Reserve hotel celebrations, restaurants, private transportation and airport transfers before arrival.

Our Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Sheraton Lisboa were highlights of the trip. The festive season also made Lisbon and Porto especially photogenic, while the quieter streets on Christmas Day created a very different sightseeing experience.

Our Recommendation

Choose May, June or September for the easiest version of a Lisbon–Porto–Douro–Algarve journey. Choose October for a quieter cultural trip with improving value. Choose late December when Christmas lights, family celebrations and mild-weather sightseeing matter more than beach conditions.
